What to expect
Every child is unique and response to therapy can vary. Our services are tailored to what each child and family may need at a given point in time.
Speech and Language Therapy – The Process
What happens first?
Phone us for a free initial phone consultation. You can also e-mail us to arrange this.
What happens next?
Your child will be assessed at home, nursery/school or in our clinic. We run weekly clinics on Tuesdays and Fridays. Saturday appointments may be arranged.
The Initial consultation and assessment will involve discussing your concerns in detail and the impact this may be having on your child and others. We will also gather case history information and any other relevant details.
We will then work with your child to assess their skills and needs. This will involve using both formal (standardised) and informal methods delivered in a careful, non-threatening and child-friendly way.
It is best practice for Speech and Language Therapists to liaise with any others involved with your child, with your permission. We may also gain information from education and health professionals as this will provide a fuller picture of your child's skills. It also ensures they receive the most appropriate input and support to achieve their full potential.
What happens after assessment?
Following assessment, we will talk to you about the assessment findings and what your child needs. Recommendations which we may make include the following:
It is important to note that parents/carers need to be fully involved in therapy and in reinforcing activities at home in order for your child to make progress.
-
Referral to other agencies for further assessment (e.g. Audiology, Paediatrician etc.) where necessary. Sometimes this is required in order to have a complete picture of your child’s needs.
- Direct therapy
Aims will be agreed with you and/or your child’s teacher. We will work directly with your child and will suggest activities to be carried out at home/nursery/school. The number and frequency of therapy sessions offered will depend on your child's difficulties. Following a period of therapy, a short break is often required in order for your child to consolidate skills before moving onto the next step.
- Home or school programme
Aims will be agreed with you and/or your child’s teacher. A written programme of activities will be provided. These activities should be carried out by you and/or member of the education staff. Your child's progress will be monitored by us at an agreed time. New aims will be set as appropriate.
- No therapy required
If your child's skills are progressing within the average range, no therapy intervention will be necessary. We may recommend some activities which will continue to support your child's communication development.
It is important to note that parents/carers need to be fully involved in therapy and in reinforcing activities at home in order for your child to make progress.
